Empowering Future Leaders Through Mathematical Excellence

A collaborative initiative by My Learning Genie (MLG) and Home of Hope (HOH)

The Math Excellence Program helps students see mathematics as one connected language rather than a collection of separate courses.

Through real-world problem solving, students explore how ideas from Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus build upon one another and can be used to understand and solve meaningful problems.


Summer 2026 Program

July 20--31, 2026 | Online

In Summer 2026, My Learning Genie and Home of Hope came together to conduct a two-week Math Excellence Program built around a single real-world case study.

Students became the founding team of Genie Mobile, a fictional telecommunications company. As new business challenges emerged, students discovered the need for increasingly sophisticated mathematics.

The goal was not to master years of mathematics in two weeks. It was to build a conceptual roadmap that helped students understand how mathematical ideas connect.


One Project. One Mathematical Journey.

Over 10 instructional days, students progressed through a connected sequence of mathematical ideas---from Algebra 1 through Calculus.

Algebra 1

Day 1 --- Linear Functions
Design Genie Mobile's first phone plan.

Day 2 --- Systems of Equations
Compare Genie Mobile with a competitor and determine when each plan is more economical.

Algebra 2

Day 3 --- Quadratic Functions
Find the monthly fee that maximizes profit.

Day 4 --- Exponential & Logarithmic Functions
Forecast customer growth and determine when the company could reach one million customers.

Geometry

Day 5 --- Coordinate Geometry
Use distance and midpoint concepts to decide where the next cell tower should be built.

Precalculus

Day 6 --- Function Transformations
Analyze how changes to Genie Mobile's pricing affect its mathematical model.

Day 7 --- Trigonometric Models
Predict repeating patterns in daily network traffic.

Day 8 --- Parametric & Polar Equations
Track a moving customer and analyze network coverage.

Calculus

Day 9 --- Limits & Derivatives
Use instantaneous rate of change to determine the profit-maximizing price.

Day 10 --- Integrals & Differential Equations
Calculate total network data flow, explore long-term growth, and bring the entire mathematical journey together.


How Students Learned

Each session combined:

Students were encouraged to go beyond simply finding an answer and instead ask:

What does the mathematics mean?
Why does it work?
How does it connect to what I already know?
How can I use it to solve a real problem?

This approach helped students experience mathematics as a progression of connected ideas---from a simple linear equation all the way to calculus.

From Algebra to Calculus

Algebra 1 → Algebra 2 → Geometry → Precalculus → Calculus

Algebra gave students tools to build and compare models.

Algebra 2 expanded those models to optimization and exponential growth.

Geometry gave mathematical models spatial meaning.

Precalculus introduced transformations, periodic behavior, and motion.

Calculus provided tools for understanding instantaneous change and accumulation.

By the end of the program, students could see how concepts encountered years apart in a traditional curriculum are part of one connected mathematical language.


Continuing the Journey

The Summer 2026 program became the beginning of a continuing Math Excellence initiative.

Following the two-week summer program, My Learning Genie and Home of Hope continued to offer free weekly math enrichment sessions, organized by students' mathematical level.

The continuing program maintains the same emphasis on:

From Algebra to Calculus, students discovered that mathematics is not simply a collection of disconnected subjects. It is a powerful language for understanding problems, making decisions, and connecting ideas.
