Below are answers to common questions parents ask about Computer Science support at My Learning Genie.
1. What Computer Science courses do you support?
We support a range of Computer Science learning paths, including:
- AP Computer Science A
- Java programming

- advanced enrichment in selected topics beyond the standard school curriculum
Our support is personalized based on the student’s current course, experience level, and goals.
2. Do you help with AP Computer Science A?
Yes. We support students in AP Computer Science A, including core topics such as:
- classes and objects
- methods
- arrays and ArrayLists
- inheritance and polymorphism
- recursion
- sorting and searching
- practice problems and AP-style preparation
We help students build both conceptual understanding and coding fluency so they can perform well in class and on the AP exam.
3. Do you support Java programming?
Yes. Java is a major part of our Computer Science support, especially for students in AP Computer Science A and school-based Java courses.
We help students build comfort with syntax, object-oriented programming, debugging, and structured problem-solving so they can move beyond memorizing code patterns.
4. Do you support Python as well?
Yes. We also support Python foundations, especially for students who are newer to programming or who want to build computational thinking alongside Math.
Python can be a strong entry point for learning variables, control flow, problem decomposition, and logical reasoning in a more accessible way.
5. Do you help with Data Structures?
Yes. We support students learning Data Structures, including topics such as:
- arrays and linked structures
- stacks and queues
- trees and binary search trees
- heaps and priority queues
- recursion
- sorting and iterators
We help students understand not just how to use these structures, but when and why they matter.
6. Do you support AP Computer Science Principles as well?
Yes, we can support students in AP Computer Science Principles depending on their school’s course sequence and goals.
That support may include computational thinking, introductory programming, data concepts, and project-based learning, while keeping the instruction aligned with the student’s classroom expectations.
7. Can you help if my child is struggling in Computer Science right now?
Yes. We work with students who feel stuck, confused, or discouraged in programming and Computer Science.
We identify where the breakdown is happening, whether it is syntax, logic, debugging, or conceptual understanding, and rebuild from there so the student can make steady progress with more confidence.
8. Can you also help students who are already strong and want to go further?
Yes. We support both students who need foundational reinforcement and students who are ready for more advanced work.
For stronger students, we can deepen algorithmic thinking, improve code quality, strengthen abstraction skills, and support more advanced coursework or enrichment.
9. How is Computer Science tutoring different from Math tutoring?
Computer Science requires a different kind of thinking.
In addition to logic and structure, students must learn how to design solutions, write code carefully, test their ideas, debug errors, and revise their approach when something does not work. We help students build that full problem-solving process.
10. Do you focus more on coding syntax or computational thinking?
Both.
Students need enough syntax fluency to write working code, but they also need deeper computational thinking to solve new problems independently. We focus on helping students understand the logic behind the code, not just copy correct-looking answers.
11. My child can read code but struggles to write code independently. Can you help?
Yes. This is one of the most common challenges in Computer Science.
A student may understand examples during class but still struggle to design a solution from scratch. We help students break problems into steps, plan before coding, and build confidence writing code on their own.
12. Do you help with debugging?
Yes. Debugging is a major part of learning Computer Science well.
We teach students how to inspect errors, trace program flow, test assumptions, and think systematically when code does not behave as expected. This is one of the most important skills for long-term success in programming.
13. Do you help with homework, labs, quizzes, tests, and projects?
Yes. We support students with current coursework, including homework, labs, quizzes, tests, coding assignments, and class projects.
At the same time, we focus on building durable understanding so students become more independent and capable over time.
14. Do you help students prepare for the AP Computer Science exam?
Yes. We help students prepare for AP Computer Science A through a combination of concept review, coding practice, problem-solving, and exam-focused preparation.
Our goal is to help students understand the material deeply enough that they can apply it under timed exam conditions with confidence.
15. Can you support students from rigorous Bay Area schools?
Yes. We work with students from rigorous Bay Area academic environments and tailor support to the pace and expectations of their school and course sequence.
Our support is designed to align with challenging STEM coursework while helping students build real mastery rather than just trying to keep up.
16. Do you support students interested in advanced or enrichment topics beyond school?
Yes. In addition to core school support, we can help students explore broader Computer Science interests and advanced enrichment topics, depending on readiness and goals.
This may include deeper problem-solving, stronger programming habits, and selected advanced topics that extend beyond a standard school syllabus.
17. What if my child feels intimidated by programming or says they are “not a coding person”?
That is a very common feeling, especially early on.
We work to create a supportive environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and build confidence gradually. Computer Science becomes much less intimidating when students start to understand the logic behind the code and experience success step by step.
18. Do you offer online or in-person Computer Science tutoring?
Yes. We offer both in-person sessions in San Jose and virtual sessions for students who prefer the flexibility of online learning.
19. How are Computer Science sessions personalized?
Each session is tailored to the student’s current course, coding background, strengths, learning gaps, and long-term goals.
We look at what the student is learning in school, where they are getting stuck, and what type of support will help them build both skill and confidence most effectively.
20. How do I know if my child needs extra support in Computer Science?
Common signs include:
- difficulty starting coding assignments independently
- confusion about how to translate a problem into code
- frequent frustration while debugging
- heavy reliance on copying examples
- low confidence in tests or programming labs
- understanding code when reading it, but not when writing it
